Building Momentum

I’m writing again and it feels great. Thankfully I don’t have any more books and there’s no internet access so my willpower has been bolstered by the sheer lack of temptation.

It has been hard to start my rewrite of the “To Kill a God” story but I bit into it today. I’ve revamped all the character motivations (well, some were just tweaks) and made significant changes to several of them. I’m also starting the story in a new place and the protagonist has been twisted into someone far more interesting. I’ve thought of a few ways to ramp up some of the conflicts and brought out a few more. Now I need to keep building on the momentum and fight to keep writing every day.

The spur for this burst of enthusiasm was the Roundtable Podcast. The workshop episodes are usually my favourites but today it was listening to “More than 20 minutes with Myke Cole”. It wasn’t that he said anything new but he just reminded me of something that I had forgotten. He heard Brandon Sanderson say “you’ve got to want it more than video games” if you’re going to be a writer.

I do want it more than video games and right now I’m going to make myself want it more than sleep. I’m headed to workout and plan tonight’s writing. Then I’m going to follow the advice of one of my other favourite podcasts: Writing Excuses. It was BICHOK. You’ve got to put your But In Chair & Hands On Keyboard or you’ll never get anything finished.

Tonight I’ll sacrifice some sweat and sleep to the muse worshiping at the altar of my 14 inch Philips Monitor (no I’m not bragging!) courtesy of Her Majesty and the mighty battlewagon ALGONQUIN.
