Confession – A Memory of Light

The final book of the Wheel of Time series is out. I trust Brandon Sanderson to deliver a great ending to a series that has been going on for most of my adult life but…. Where did that but come from? I suppose it’s because I haven’t gone out to buy it yet. All the other books I’ve purchased within days of coming out. It’s the only series that I’ve consciously decided to purchase and keep the hardcover books. That particular bookshelf definitely stands out amongst the thousands of well worn paperbacks marshaled along the Man Cave’s walls. I suppose that part of the answer is that such a long time between books has dampened my ardor. Another aspect is probably that my writing has eaten up most of the hours I previously spent brain deep in some fantastic adventure story. Finally, and the most likely suspect, I’m just not ready for the Wheel of Time to end.

The Wheel of Time has been central to my fantasy reading for so long and I’ve read the books so many times that an ending, even a good one, seems out of reach. I know the way ahead. I’m going to re-read the last two books and then dive into the last Wheel of Time book. I don’t doubt for a second that the story will draw me in and I’ll love it but a small voice will cry out when I turn that last page.

(Unfortunately for the seriousness of this post, the voice will come from a tiny Shatner wearing a warder’s cloak and sword shaking his minuscule fists and shouting KAAAAHHHHHN!)
